PITTSFORD, Mich. - Michimich -- Want your very own boat dock, but dreading installing it?
Feeling unsure where to start?
Here's the secret nobody tells you: dock installation doesn't have to be a day-long ordeal. With the right dock design, a little pre-season preparation, and a simple two-person plan, most Alumi-Span docks go in at about three minutes per section. Here's how to make that happen at your place:
Step 1: Think about installation before the dock goes in the water
The easiest dock to install is the one that was designed for it. That means lightweight sections, and a support system that doesn't require augering every post. Stringer brackets and bottom plates let you set most of the dock without digging a single hole.
Where you need extra holding power, permanent augers create a fixed underwater base that positions the dock perfectly every year. If you're replacing an older dock, this is the moment to upgrade those components. It's the single best investment you can make for a painless spring.

Step 2: Do the prep work in the garage, not in the water
The biggest time-waster on install day is assembling parts while standing in waders. Instead, pre-assemble everything you can before the dock ever leaves the shore:

Step 2: Do the prep work in the garage, not in the water
The biggest time-waster on install day is assembling parts while standing in waders. Instead, pre-assemble everything you can before the dock ever leaves the shore:
- Build your "standard assemblies" (the H-shaped units of crossarm, posts, and bottom plates) on dry land.
- Attach stringer brackets to each crossarm, but leave bolts snug rather than fully tightened.
- Loosely connect the bottom plate halves with carriage bolts.
- Number each assembly with a permanent marker so it goes back in the same spot next year.
- Bag and label the hardware for each assembly — nothing slows a project down like hunting for a bolt in the grass.
