GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., July 10, 2024 ~ Grand Rapids, Michigan - Art enthusiasts and cultural explorers, mark your calendars for September 13-28, 2024 as ArtPrize returns to the city for its annual international art competition and cultural event. This year's event promises to be a feast for the senses with a major attraction that is sure to delight and inspire visitors - Z-Car I.

Designed by the legendary architect and designer Zaha Hadid, Z-Car I is a stunning prototype that embodies futuristic form and thinking. As part of the permanent collection of the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University (MSU Broad Art Museum), this masterpiece will be on loan and displayed at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum during ArtPrize.

According to Rachel Winter, Assistant Curator at the MSU Broad Art Museum, "The MSU Broad Art Museum's collection of work by Zaha Hadid Design is one of the many gems that make up the rich cultural and artistic landscape in Michigan." She adds, "It's very exciting to be able to share one part of that collection, Z-Car I, with the many visitors from around the world who will visit ArtPrize this September."

Z-Car I was designed nearly twenty years ago but its innovative design still prompts important questions about climate-friendly design for a better lived experience. Made of lightweight carbon fiber composite, this three-wheel car with seating for two is tailored to be emission-free and meet the needs of urban life. Its hinged rear suspension allows for optimal navigation in city driving while also creating a smaller footprint and a lower, safer, more aerodynamic form at higher speeds.

While not an official entry in ArtPrize, Z-Car I will serve as a showcase piece among other entries exhibited at the Gerald R. Ford Museum. "We are thrilled to host Zaha Hadid's visionary Z-Car I," says Brooke Clement, director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum. "It's an honor to showcase such a remarkable work that melds art, technology, and functionality."

In addition to being a highlight of this year's event, Z-Car I also represents a new category of entries at ArtPrize - +Design. These entries are physical expressions of purpose with the intent to impact the way life is experienced. Just like other categories, +Design works are eligible for both public vote and juried awards.
