FRANKENMUTH, Mich. - Michimich -- This year marks a significant milestone for the Bavarian Inn Holz Brücke Covered Bridge as it celebrates its 45th anniversary. Spanning the scenic Cass River, this iconic structure is not just a bridge but a symbol of Frankenmuth's rich history, craftsmanship, and dedication to tradition.
The Holz Brücke Covered Bridge was conceived by Tiny Zehnder, a visionary leader of the Bavarian Inn Corporation. As the town grew in the late 1970s, the need for expanded parking became apparent. Tiny envisioned a bridge that would honor Frankenmuth's German heritage while showcasing old-world craftsmanship.
Construction of the bridge began in 1979 under the skilled hands of renowned bridge builder Milton Graton. Utilizing traditional hand tools and methods, the project took two years to complete, culminating in a remarkable feat where twin oxen, Buck and Bright, moved the 230-ton structure into place in January 1980.
Spanning 239 feet long, 28 feet wide, and standing 14 feet high, the bridge is crafted from Douglas fir timber and features an authentic covered design that protects it from the elements while paying homage to European traditions. The wooden beams are secured with wooden pegs, reflecting a craftsmanship that remains rare today.
