DETROIT, May 1, 2025 ~ The Detroit Amplifiers have made a major addition to their team, as they announced the hiring of former NBA player Earl Boykins and respected coach George Gervin Jr. for their inaugural BIG3 season. These two additions bring a wealth of experience, a passion for player development, and a strong connection to the Amplifiers' mission to represent the city of Detroit.
Boykins, who stands at just 5'5", had an impressive 13-year career in the NBA with teams such as the Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards. Despite his small stature, Boykins was known for his quickness, leadership, and deep knowledge of the game. Since retiring from playing, he has become a highly respected voice in coaching and player mentorship. Boykins also has a personal connection to Detroit as he played college basketball at Eastern Michigan University, located just 36 miles west of the city.
Gervin Jr., on the other hand, has spent years coaching and developing talent both in the United States and internationally. He is known for his focus on fundamentals, mental toughness, and player growth – qualities that are deeply ingrained in his family's basketball legacy. Before becoming a coach, Gervin Jr. had a successful playing career overseas in countries such as Brazil and Sweden.

Head Coach George Gervin expressed his excitement about having Boykins and Gervin Jr. join him on the bench: "They both have extensive experience in the game as players, coaches, and developers. They are tough, smart, and passionate about basketball." He also noted that their presence will not only benefit the team on the court but also serve as mentors for players off the court.
Boykins shared his enthusiasm about joining the Amplifiers: "I'm honored to represent Detroit and be part of this team. It's even more special to coach alongside one of the greatest players in NBA history – who is also an Eastern Michigan alum. I can't wait to get to work and help build something great here."
Gervin Jr. also expressed his excitement about coaching alongside his father and having Boykins on the team: "Both of them have made significant contributions to the game, and being able to build something new for Detroit – a city my dad proudly calls home – is a privilege."

The Amplifiers' roster is already stacked with experienced players such as Jeremy Pargo, Darnell Jackson, and Joe Johnson, who is a seven-time NBA All-Star and three-time BIG3 MVP. With the addition of Boykins and Gervin Jr., the team has a dangerous mix of skill, experience, and veteran leadership heading into their debut season. The final two spots on the roster will be filled during the upcoming BIG3 Draft in Las Vegas on May 15.
Fans can catch the Amplifiers in action when the BIG3 season kicks off on June 14, 2025. Their first home game will be at Little Caesars Arena on July 20. Tickets and season information are available now on BIG3.com.
