Hottle explains that while units using R-410A may be less expensive initially, there is no guarantee that the refrigerant will be readily available in the future if repairs are needed. On the other hand, newer models using A2L refrigerants may come at a higher cost but offer better efficiency and have a lower Global Warming potential (GWP), making them an environmentally friendly choice.

Hottle advises homeowners to consult with a trusted HVAC professional when deciding which system is best for their needs. She also suggests considering switching to newer models as their current system reaches 10 years old. With the refrigerant change and the evolving situation with tariffs, it may become increasingly challenging to find replacement R-410A in the future.
