PETOSKEY, Mich., April 29, 2025 ~ Detroit, MI- The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute has announced a new partnership with Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine and CrossFit Petoskey to offer free exercise training for cancer survivors. This program, known as Cross-Training and Physical Activity: A Better Life Experience (CAPABLE), aims to introduce the sport of CrossFit to cancer survivors and help them build strength and improve their overall health.
The 12-week program will begin on Tuesday, May 6 at CrossFit Petoskey in Petoskey, Michigan. Previous exercise experience is not necessary for participants to join.
According to Jennifer Beebe-Dimmer, Ph.D., MPH, leader of the Population Studies and Disparities Research (PSDR) Program at Karmanos and professor of Oncology at WSU, the CAPABLE program has been running for six years and has seen great success among cancer patients. "We have seen great success among cancer patients getting back into a consistent exercise program focused on building strength," she said.

Regular physical activity is recommended for cancer survivors by the American Cancer Society. The organization suggests that survivors avoid inactivity and resume their regular physical activities as soon as their doctor deems it safe. They also recommend exercising for 150-300 minutes weekly, including strength training.
Dr. Beebe-Dimmer designed CAPABLE to help survivors meet these exercise recommendations and teach them fitness skills that they can use beyond the classes. In a pilot study published in Preventive Medicine in June 2023, Dr. Beebe-Dimmer and her research team found positive outcomes from 48 cancer survivors who participated in CAPABLE.
"CrossFit combines high-intensity interval and strength training," explained Dr. Beebe-Dimmer. "As we take cancer survivors through this training, we look at a host of outcomes – everything from physical fitness and body composition to sleep health and quality of life."

The workouts in the CAPABLE program are designed to be simple and scalable for each participant. This means that exercises can be modified to fit the individual's ability and any restrictions outlined by their physician. Some participants may lift five-pound weights while others may lift more, and some may walk while others may jog.
To participate in the program, individuals must be adults over 18 years old, cancer survivors of any type of cancer, and receive medical clearance from their oncologist or primary care provider.
The 12-week program will consist of classes held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. at CrossFit Petoskey. Optional nutrition guidance will also be provided to help participants make the most of their 12 weeks in CAPABLE and build healthy habits for life.
For more information about the CAPABLE program or to register for classes, interested individuals can visit karmanos.org/CAPABLE or contact the CAPABLE team at 313-578-4246. Don't miss this opportunity to improve your health and well-being as a cancer survivor with the help of CrossFit Petoskey and Karmanos Cancer Institute.
