Luna Pier senior living leader encourages Monroe County families to discuss care needs, costs and preferences before an unexpected event.
MONROE, Mich. - Michimich -- A fall, sudden hospitalization or overwhelmed caregiver can leave families facing difficult decisions about an aging parent's care. Lamont G. Jones, CEO of Harborside Senior Living, is encouraging families in Monroe County and surrounding communities to begin those conversations early.
"Planning ahead is an act of love," Jones said. "It gives families time to understand their options and allows older adults to help shape decisions about their future."
Jones encourages families to discuss their loved one's preferences, identify daily support needs, review care costs and establish a backup plan if the primary caregiver becomes unavailable.
Families should also explore local care options before an urgent situation arises. Touring a community early gives them an opportunity to ask questions about services, accommodations, financial responsibilities and what happens when care needs change.

"Every person deserves dignity, a voice and a thoughtful plan," Jones said. "Our responsibility is to turn concern into preparation and preparation into purposeful action."
To help families begin, Harborside has developed "Before a Crisis: A Family Guide to Planning for an Aging Parent." The complimentary, faith-inspired resource includes conversation prompts, care and budget worksheets, questions for community tours and a seven-day action plan.
Harborside Senior Living invites families to discuss their loved one's needs, explore current living options and ask about potential assistance for eligible care services. Program eligibility, covered services and remaining housing or participant costs must be confirmed individually.
