Civil War Expert Jack Dempsey to Speak on "Warriors for Freedom"

GROSSE POINTE, Mich. - Michimich -- The War Memorial will present a free historical lecture Thursday, January 23, 2025, featuring award-winning author, Jack Dempsey. Doors open at 6:30pm; the lecture starts at 7:00pm, with a Q&A to follow. Mr. Dempsey is a Civil War and Michigan history expert, former President of the Michigan Historical Commission, and co-founder of the Michigan Civil War Association.

His latest book, Warriors for Freedom, documents the Civil War's famed First Michigan Colored Infantry Regiment, comprised of 1,500 Black volunteer soldiers, and features the men and women of color who contributed in previously unrecognized ways to defending and extending human liberty. The book sheds unprecedented light on the heroism, patriotism, and fortitude of Michiganders of African descent during this tumultuous era in American history.
