Detroit ~ As the summer of 2024 continues to bring powerful storms to southeast Michigan, C & C Heating & Air Conditioning, a reputable heating and cooling company with over 70 years of experience, is urging homeowners to take precautions in order to protect their homes from potential damage.
According to Dayna Hottle, the general manager of C & C Heating & Air Conditioning, this year's stormy summer has already caused significant power outages and damage to homes. She emphasizes the importance of planning and preparation in order to safeguard one's home and family during these unpredictable weather conditions.
In late June, a storm left over 40,000 people in the greater Detroit area without power. The strong winds and heavy rain caused trees to fall and resulted in flooding. The Farmer's Almanac has also predicted that this summer will continue to be "muggy and stormy" in the upper Midwest.
Hottle points out that severe storms can result in costly damage, with insurance claims for storm-related incidents totaling over $50 billion in 2023. She warns that this number is expected to increase each year.

To protect their homes from potential damage, Hottle advises homeowners to take certain measures. These include maintaining a well-kept roof by keeping tree limbs away and sealing any cracks or gaps around chimneys and ventilation pipes. Additionally, she suggests checking windows, doors, and foundations for any openings that may allow water to enter the home. Small gaps can be sealed with caulk or other sealants while larger cracks may require the assistance of a foundation specialist.
In addition to these precautions, Hottle recommends keeping the yard clear by securing or storing outdoor furniture, grills, and toys that could become dangerous projectiles during high winds.
For those who rely on electricity for medical equipment or medications that need refrigeration, Hottle suggests investing in a generator as a backup plan during power outages. This can also help keep air conditioning running, which is crucial in preventing heat-related illnesses during the summer.
In case of prolonged power outages, Hottle advises families to have an exit plan in place and to stock up on essential items such as canned food, a manual can opener, and battery-operated devices like radios and chargers.
