EAST LANSING, Mich., Feb. 22, 2024 ~ The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) has recently announced the election of two new physician members to their Board of Directors. Dr. John T. Finnell, M.D., M.Sc., and Dr. Melissa A. Platt, M.D., have been chosen to join the board and bring their expertise and insight to advance the work of ABEM.

ABEM President Ramon W. Johnson, M.D., M.B.A., expressed his excitement in welcoming Dr. Finnell and Dr. Platt to the board. Both physicians are ABEM-certified and have been dedicated volunteers for ABEM activities in the past.

Dr. Finnell is a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine and previously served as the Chief Medical Information Officer for Emergency Medicine at Eskenazi Health. He is also a nocturnist at Eskenazi Health where he practices emergency medicine. With his extensive experience, Dr. Finnell played a crucial role in developing the School of Medicine's first ED tracking system and later led its transition to EPIC. He also spearheaded the creation of the School's first ACGME-accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship and served as Fellowship Director. As an ABEM volunteer, he has been an oral examiner since 2002 and an exam question writer since 2016.

Dr. Platt is a Professor and former Program Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UofL School of Medicine, where she also serves as Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education. She is one of only four female professors of Emergency Medicine in Kentucky and is a mentor to women across the specialty on a national level. As an ABEM volunteer, she has been an oral examiner since 2013 and an exam question writer since 2020, including for the Health Administration, Leadership, and Management subspecialty certification examination. Dr. Platt practices clinically at UofL Hospital.

The addition of these two highly qualified physicians to the ABEM Board of Directors is expected to bring valuable perspectives and contribute to the advancement of emergency medicine. Their dedication and expertise will undoubtedly benefit the board and its mission to promote excellence in emergency medicine.
