HOWELL, Mich. - Michimich -- Is your lawn ready for the coming winter?
Is it set up to come back strong in the spring?
Every fall, homeowners across Southeast Michigan do the same thing: mow a little lower, rake the leaves, and call it a season. But the weeks before the ground freezes are actually some of the most important ones your lawn will see all year. Winter is when your grass goes dormant, but it's not dead. It's resting, and how you put it to bed determines how it wakes up.
Winterization is a Head Start
Your grass spends spring and summer building energy. When temperatures drop, that energy moves down into the roots, where it's stored to survive the cold. The whole goal of fall care is making sure your turf has a full tank before it goes to sleep.
That's where winterization comes in. Applied in late fall, it delivers nutrients that your lawn actually uses differently than a spring feeding. Instead of pushing top growth, it strengthens the root system and helps the grass store carbohydrates and proteins for the long winter ahead. The result is a lawn that comes out of dormancy faster, thicker, and better able to crowd out weeds before they get a foothold.

Timing is Everything
Winterization works best when it's applied after active growth has slowed but before the ground freezes solid. In our area, that usually lands somewhere in late October through November. Put it down too early and the grass is still growing, so it uses the nutrients for top growth instead of root storage. Too late and the ground is too frozen for the nutrients to move into the soil.
That's a narrow window, and it shifts a little every year depending on the weather. It's one of those jobs where a professional's timing and feel for the season genuinely matters.
