Michigan: Detroit casinos' year-to-date aggregate revenue remains slightly above 2018 as September, quarterly results fall

Detroit, Oct. 8, 2019 - The Detroit casinos' year-to-date aggregate revenue of $1.09 billion was 0.3 percent higher than for the first nine months of last year. September aggregate revenue of $112.3 million was down 2.5 percent from September 2018 revenue and 6.3 percent lower than August 2019 results.

September results

Motor City and Greektown casinos recorded revenue gains in September compared with September 2018 results, but MGM Grand Detroit's monthly results were lower than a year earlier. Greektown monthly aggregate revenue rose 0.7 percent to $26.9 million, and MotorCity results were up by 0.1 percent to $38.9 million. MGM results fell 6.4 percent to $46.5 million.

September market shares were:
  • MGM, 41 percent

  • Greektown, 24 percent


During September, the three Detroit casinos paid $9.1 million in gaming taxes to the state of Michigan compared with $9.3 million during the same month last year.

The three Detroit casinos reported making $13.8 million in wagering tax and development agreement payments to the city of Detroit during September.

Third quarter revenue results

MotorCity Casino recorded a slight revenue increase while quarterly revenues fell at the other locations, resulting in a 1.1 percent overall decline compared with third quarter 2018 numbers:
  • MGM: $151.2 million, down 1.3 percent

  • MotorCity: $119.6 million, up 0.3 percent

  • Greektown: $80.3 million, down 2.6 percent
