Veterans Day celebration at Saint Kenneth's Church in Plymouth
PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Michimich -- The Michigan Philharmonic will host a glowing tribute to veterans during a special Veterans Day celebration on Friday, Nov. 11 at Saint Kenneth's Church on Haggerty Road in Plymouth.
Led by Conductor and Music Director Nan Washburn, now in her 24th season, the Philharmonic will offer "A Veterans' Tribute – Our American Heroes," featuring American composers and honoring this nation's heroes across many generations, including soldiers, generals and presidents like Abraham Lincoln.
The 7:30 p.m. concert features Aaron Copland's portrait of Abraham Lincoln with mesmerizing readings from his speeches by radio host Peter Whorf. It will also celebrate African-American soldiers who will be remembered with a moving memoriam by William Grant Still.
A newly commissioned piece celebrates the novel "Cold Mountain." Jennifer Higdon's stunning opera won the International Opera Award for Best New Opera with themes that highlight the emotional throes of love, war, and the journey of a soldier making his way back home. The piece was made possible through New Music for America and a consortium of orchestras, including the Philharmonic.
