DETROIT, Sept. 22, 2025 ~ In a major victory for the workers at National Trails, the bus drivers, monitors, and mechanics who provide transportation services for Detroit Public Schools have ratified their first collective bargaining agreement with Teamsters Local 243. The four-year contract, which was approved by an overwhelming 96 percent margin, includes significant wage increases, sick leave, holiday pay, and important union protections.

According to Phil Turner, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 243, this achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and determination of the rank-and-file members. "As Teamsters, we understand that an organizing campaign is not complete until we negotiate a strong first contract," Turner stated. "We fought tirelessly to make it happen and this victory is a testament to our members fighting for their fair share."

The newly approved contract is highly competitive in the school transportation industry and ensures that workers are recognized and safeguarded for the vital service they provide to students and their families. Tawanda Lewis, a bus driver and steward with Local 243 expressed her satisfaction with the agreement saying, "We deserve to be valued and respected, and this contract guarantees that will happen. We take safety seriously and always lead by example. Now, we have a strong first contract to continue doing what we do best - serving our community with pride."
