"Sizzling" outdoor series crisscrosses metro Detroit and "thumb" region

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Michimich -- Music lovers looking for great outdoor classical and pops music can go on the road with the Michigan Philharmonic this summer. The state's top regional orchestra will perform in Plymouth, Milford, downtown Detroit, Grosse Pointe and Port Austin.

Most of the concerts are free, and each one will be on an outdoor stage as the Philharmonic, led by longtime Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn, offers up a fun mix of movie music, patriotic themes and much more throughout June, July and August.

Here's a list of the scheduled performances:

Saturday, June 25 ­– Kellogg Park, in beautiful downtown Plymouth, plays host to the annual "An American Salute" patriotic concert. This free event begins at 7 p.m. and includes a special guest conductor, Carl Battishill, for "76 Trombones."

Saturday, July 9 – The Philharmonic travel to Kensington Metropark for its annual performance at Maple Beach. This concert features "Michigan Philharmonic at the Movies!" The free event begins at 7:30 p.m. There is a Metropark fee to enter.

Thursday, July 14 – Next, the Philharmonic travels to downtown Detroit and the Campus Martius Park along Woodward Avenue for another "Michigan Philharmonic at the Movies!" This event is a celebration of movie themes with numbers from "West Side Story" to "Encanto" and "Jurassic Park." The free concert begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by a showing of "Encanto."

Saturday, Aug.13 – A special Michigan Philharmonic concert is planned for the historic Eleanor and Edsel Ford Estate featuring another movie-themed performance. There is an event cost for the 7 p.m. concert; visit www.fordhouse.org for details.

Saturday, Aug. 20 – For the first time the Philharmonic travels to Michigan's thumb area for a patriotic salute. The 4 p.m. concert will be performed in Port Austin located along Lake Huron and featuring patriotic themes.

Also of note, the Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) hosts its free summer Pops Concert at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 in Plymouth's Kellogg Park.
