Sensory Diversity is the recognition that every individual perceives, filters, and responds to the world in a fundamentally unique way.
DURHAM, Conn. - Michimich -- Written by long-time advocate, Shaylynn Hayes-Raymond, Sensory Diversity is the recognition that every individual perceives, filters, and responds to the world in a fundamentally unique way. Hayes-Raymond is an LCT-C, holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, and is the Director of The International Misophonia Foundation.
While the vital movement for neurodiversity celebrates the different ways our brains process thought, sensory diversity focuses on the very gateway to those thoughts—our senses. It asserts that the world, both digital and physical, must be intentionally built to accommodate the full spectrum of human sensory experience. Sensory diversity views our senses similarly to how neurodiversity views the brain. However, sensory diversity is focused widely on specific sensory processing of the world. While sensory dysregulation, the term I use for those who have sensory processing that is atypical, refers to a mismatch in sensory processing, neurodiversity refers to different brain types, including neurotypical and neurodivergent. In this view, sensory dysregulation is a form of neurodivergence.

Praise for Hayes-Raymond's previous work, Misophonia Matters: "Misophonia is a relatively unknown condition suffered by many, but to many in the medical community it doesn't exist. There are no known treatments. The impact it has on people can vary widely. This book is a welcome addition to the growing amount of literature on the subject. It explains what the condition is, how it can impact those who suffer from it, and offers practical advice on how one may possibly cope with it. A very welcome addition and extremely well written by an author with experience." - Scott Wright, Misophonia Sufferer
