The City of Sterling Heights has been awarded a $500,000 federal grant that will be used to conduct a citywide traffic calming study.
The grant comes from U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg's Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program designed to tackle the growing issue of traffic fatalities on American roads, sidewalks and crosswalks.
The Sterling Heights grant is a pass-through from Macomb County, which was awarded $700,000 for a countywide study that will also include County roads within the borders of Sterling Heights.
"The study will results in a comprehensive City traffic plan that will serve as a guidebook for all traffic issues," said City Manager Mark Vanderpool. "Through the use of safety professionals and consultants, the City will not only address current traffic safety concerns, but also future challenges as the City continues to grow and diversify."

As a part of the study, priority roadways will be identified, and all available traffic safety solutions will be considered, including traffic enforcement portable radar signage, public education, speed humps, speed dots, traffic circles, medians, curb extensions, lane striping, chicanes/slow points, full and partial lane closure, and residential and commercial parking. The final City traffic plan will outline a consistent, fair and impartial method for managing traffic complaints and resident requests for traffic calming measures in residential or commercial areas
"We want to continue to improve the safety of our streets to keep Sterling Heights a safe, livable and accessible community for all," said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor. "This grant will allow us to better understand and address the traffic concerns of our residents and is an important step to make sure every street user, whether they are driving, walking or biking, is safe."
The study is expected to be completed within the next year. Resident updates will be communicated via the City's digital newsletter, social media and more. Residents can subscribe to City updates at sterling-heights.net/getconnected
