DETROIT, Sept. 19, 2024 ~ The Surge Institute's Detroit Surge Academy is proud to announce the selection of 11 exceptional education leaders for their inaugural cohort. These individuals will embark on a journey of personal and professional growth as they strive to make a positive impact in their communities.

Led by Executive Director Andrea Black Evans, M.Ed., the Surge Academy is dedicated to nurturing and empowering leaders who are committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive educational landscape. "The power of collective action is undeniable," said Evans. "We are thrilled to have these brilliant individuals join us as we work towards our mission."

The selected cohort includes Zetia Hogan, Assistant Superintendent at Detroit Public Schools Community District; Tamara Johnson, Executive Director of Talent Pipelines and Professional Growth at Detroit Public Schools Community District; Chatoris Jones, Senior Director of Operations at Detroit Public Schools Community District; Chennele Laster-Bay, Dean of Lower Elementary at Westfield Charter Academy; Monica Lewis, Managing Director of Educator Fellowships at Teach for America Detroit; Adrian Monge, Director of Programs at Michigan Educator Workforce Initiative; Domini Nailer, Principal at Detroit Public Schools Community District; Ada Parris, Managing Director of Educator Fellowships at Teach for America Detroit; Sondrea Singleton, Program Director at Safe Families PLUS; Krystal Thomas, K-8 Science and Social Studies Instructional Coach at Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences; and Brandy Walker, Master Teacher at Southfield Public Schools.

Throughout their time in the program, these leaders will have the opportunity to enhance their executive skills, problem-solving abilities, and team-building techniques. They will also engage in discussions about complex topics such as historical inequity in education and politics.

The Surge Academy's collaboration with the Michigan Educator Workforce Initiative and The Skillman Foundation has made this program possible. With their support and partnership, the academy aims to create lasting change for the youth in the Detroit metropolitan area.
