ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michimich -- The Japanese Martial Arts Center (JMAC) has announced the launch of new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in Ann Arbor under the name Kozen Grappling, marking a significant expansion of its grappling curriculum and training offerings for 2026.
Kozen Grappling is designed to complement JMAC's long-standing foundation in Japanese martial arts, particularly Kodokan Judo and Nihon Jujutsu. Rather than treating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a standalone discipline, the program integrates traditional Japanese grappling principles with the strategic depth and adaptability of modern BJJ. This unified approach provides students with a comprehensive system that emphasizes technical precision, positional control, and problem-solving on the ground.
The introduction of BJJ at JMAC reflects a broader educational vision focused on lineage, discipline, and long-term skill development. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu shares deep historical roots with Judo—especially Kosen Judo, which emphasized extended ground engagement—making its inclusion a natural evolution of JMAC's existing programs. The Kozen Grappling curriculum encourages cross-disciplinary learning while maintaining the values of respect, structure, and continuous improvement that define the JMAC training experience.

The expanded dojo also provides improved accommodations for demonstrations, open houses, and community events.

As part of a pilot launch, Kozen Grappling will be offered to current JMAC students at no additional cost during the first half of 2026. Students participating in the program may pursue progression in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt system, the Judo belt system, or both, creating flexible pathways for growth within a single training environment.
