Artist Joshua Harker takes a satirical poke at celebrities and death with the "Fashionably Late"
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michimich -- Digital artist Joshua Harker pays tribute to bygone icons and artists with a satirical poke at celebrity obsession and the sensationalism of death with the new "Fashionably Late" series. The work is darkly comical in concept and delightfully revealing in execution.
Harker states, "Popular culture crafts shimmering disembodied hero brands for us to worship. We create a cultural currency by declaring that our subscriptions to these various brands are a reflection of our identities and hold value. While our relationships with these brands feel real, we don't personally know the human beings behind the characters. Their deaths merely become an ironic rebirth into the realm of pop immortality."
Combining digital sculpture, animation, and forensic facial reconstruction, the "Fashionably Late" highlights some of the mediums and tools Harker has become recognized for. Initially intended for the NFT market, the turmoil in the crypto realm has kept him at a distance. "As excited as I am about the power and usefulness of NFTs in the digital art space, I don't want to lead my collectors down a rabbit hole when things are in such disarray." says Harker. "I'd be happy to engage with seasoned NFT collectors but want to wait before I promote to my audience. Instead, I've decided to launch the series as 2d fine art prints and am currently working towards adding 3d printed sculptures to the collection."
