Lansing, MI—Stacie Clayton, Chair of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, and James E. White, Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, have issued the following statement on Governor Whitmer's proclamation declaring January 19, 2021 a Day of Racial Healing in Michigan.
"We want to thank Governor Whitmer for declaring today, January 19, 2021 a Day of Racial Healing in Michigan. It would be difficult to think of a time in recent history when we were more in need of healing for our racial divisions. The Governor's words today form a foundation we can build upon to create a more equitable Michigan. We must work together -- government agencies and non-profit organizations, business owners and community leaders, police departments and the people they serve -- to bridge the gaps of understanding and trust that divide us. The Michigan Civil Rights Commission and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights are committed to making real the goal of achieving a more just and inclusive Michigan for all."

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission was created by the Michigan Constitution to safeguard constitutional and legal guarantees against discrimination. The Commission is charged with investigating alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color or national origin, genetic information, sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, and physical and mental disability. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights serves as the operational arm of the Commission.
