Lansing, MI—Stacie Clayton, Chair of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, today issued the following statement on behalf of the Commission recognizing the contributions of the LGBTQ community and reaffirming the Commission's commitment to civil rights protection for LGBTQ individuals in Michigan.
"This month, as we celebrate the history and contributions of our nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender trailblazers, we must remember that our LGBTQ friends, neighbors and family members still face discrimination as they go about their daily lives. That is why, in May of 2018, the Commission issued an interpretive statement declaring that under Michigan's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, discrimination on the basis of sex includes protection against discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation. We stand by this decision and reaffirm our commitment to the principles upon which it was based – that all Michigan residents are entitled to be treated fairly and equally, and when they are not, they have the right to file a complaint with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights."
