Helping to curtail patient treatment non-adherence and provide personalized medications for hard-to-treat conditions.
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Michimich -- Staggering statistics suggest that when patients fail to adhere to the instructions their health care provider gave them it not only leads to an increased probability of treatment failure but in some cases is responsible for higher levels of patient hospitalization. Clinical pharmacist Scott Popyk, RPh, MBA, founder of Health Dimensions Clinical Pharmacy says when a provider partners with a compounding pharmacy, some of those patient adherence risks are reduced.
According to a study done by the Mayo Clinic, as many as 50% of patients don't remember the instructions they received regarding treatment plans and medication shortly after leaving the doctor's office1. Those instructions include how long and how often to take prescribed medications. Further, The National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Surgeon General point to a study that shows that non-adherence to medication treatment plans is responsible for 125,000 deaths and 25% of hospitalizations each year.

"When a healthcare provider partners with a compounding pharmacy, that pharmacy becomes part of the team that helps a patient through their treatment journey," says Scott Popyk, RPh, MBA, of Health Dimensions Clinical Pharmacy. "With additional patient education, follow-up consultations and refill communication with patient and prescriber, this partnership takes away many of the roadblocks to a successful treatment outcome."
Popyk says compounding or specialty pharmacies are also well equipped to help patients get answers to whether their medications are covered by insurance. The cost of some medicines and a patient's ability to pay is yet another roadblock to patient adherence.
