Free "Motor City Movie Magic" performance takes stage in Campus Martius
PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Michimich -- Michigan's premier regional orchestra, the Michigan Philharmonic, will headline this summer's first-ever Detroit Motor City Car Crawl with a free concert at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5.
"Motor City Movie Magic" features movie theme music, especially from auto-related films like "Cars" and "Back to the Future," during an evening at downtown's Campus Martius designed for young and old alike.
The Michigan Philharmonic performance is being sponsored by Ally Financial Services of Detroit. It is a part of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) and the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) downtown event known as Motor City Car Crawl. This walkable, city-wide charity weekend full of cars, outdoor fun and more begins on Thursday, Aug. 5 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 8. It also features a performance by Sheryl Crow, headlining on Saturday evening in Campus Martius.

The Philharmonic's performance will showcase a "Salute of the Cinema," including "Hooray for Hollywood," "Singin in the Rain," "Over the Rainbow," and "As Time Goes By," along with music from "Frozen," "The Lion King," "E.T.," and "Black Panther." The "Cars" movie tunes will include "Big Race," "Life is a Highway," "Real Gone," "Our Town," and "Route 66." Following the performance is a showing of the movie "Cars II."
Later this summer the Philharmonic will also be performing a special chamber concert at the historic Eleanor and Edsel Ford House on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 21 that will include compositions from a concert planned before the pandemic called "One World, Many Songs." A fundraising concert at Plymouth's historic Wilcox House is also in the works for August.
The 76th season of the Michigan Philharmonic begins in the fall with a "Take2 Celebration," offering eight performances between October and May 2022. These live performances begin with a "Blockbuster Birthday Bash" in October and will feature two world premieres, a unique mandolin composer, a famed jazz guitarist along with a steelpan soloist, a night of traditional holiday pops at the historic Penn Theatre and much more.
