New documentary gets unique access to neo-Nazis in Michigan and reveals white supremacist leader wanted to carry out domestic terror.
HOWELL, Mich. - Michimich -- Face of Hate is an intimate portrait of an American Extremist contemplating domestic terror. The new documentary is a close-up and unflinching look at right-wing hatred and intolerance in the United States.
For nearly a decade, Danish journalist and author Steffen Hou followed in the footsteps of this dangerous extremist and his affiliates leading to a shocking confession as the main character admits he was contemplating domestic terror in the US.
But the story of Jasen Barker comes with two powerful twists: Filmed over nearly a decade in Michigan; viewers discover that Barker's broken humanity, loathing, and hostility come from his inability as a child to cope with witnessing his mother's violent death in a car crash. And the other surprise: After his arrest by the FBI and spending years behind bars, Barker truly changes, transforming into a man who understands his aversions are wrong as he lays his hatred down. And that's when a film about hate and evil turns into a beautiful story about love, hope, and forgiveness.

Hou brings an outsider's perspective to the story, getting closer to Barker than any American reporter could imagine. Over the years, Hou gains Barker's trust, guiding him to chip away at his twisted worldview and showing him a path toward redemption.
"Face of Hate is not "another doc" about intolerance but a life-affirming documentary about human reconciliation. Its dark subject matter eventually shines hope, proving that even the worst people can redeem themselves and enemies can find common ground in today's America. This film shows a human transformation rarely seen on screen," film director Steffen Hou says.
As the right wing in the United States has been mainstreamed over the last eight years, Face of Hate is a powerful and riveting treatise about America's current moment.
The documentary is produced by Hou Docs and will be released on The Roku Channel in November.
