Website builders like Wix and Wordpress, while useful for inexperienced website builders, have many limitations that are difficult to get around.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michimich -- Wix and similar pre-fab website builders allow inexperienced people to build websites. So if you intend to build your own website and do everything yourself (i.e. not spend any money) then something like Wix is great because it allows you to do stuff you otherwise wouldn't be able to do.
However, these type of website building systems often throw up barriers that make it difficult for experienced designers and programmers to do what needs to be done when you want to put on your big boy (or big girl) pants and compete with the professionals. By making some things easy for novices, they end up making a lot more things difficult for someone with real skills and experience.
That's not a problem if you are planning on doing everything yourself and have limited skills. It becomes a problem when Mr. or Mrs. Inexperience builds a site, then realizes they don't know how to do something. They reach out to a pro who now has to deal with cleaning up a mess with only the limited tools in the website building system, not to mention the messy and convoluted code that those sites typically generate.

Code? Code? Who cares about code? As it turns out, Google does, and they will clobber you in the rankings if your code is sloppy or if your site is slow to load.
At the end of the day, if you're going to end up calling in the pros anyway, then it's probably a good idea to stay away from Wix and similar systems. After all, do you really want someone with limited skills and experience building your site?
