~ The Sterling Heights City Council will be discussing the proposed 2023/24 City Budget during a special budget meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 at City Hall. The proposed budget totals $238 million and the City millage rate remains the same as last year at 16.38, one of the lowest in Macomb County.

The budget funds 531 full-time positions and includes the addition of the City's first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, while still having 118 fewer full-time positions than in 2008, which saves an estimated $12 million annually. The annual budget continues to prioritize road repair and reconstruction with $6.7 million allocated for major road work to be completed during the 2023 construction season. Projects funded include Mound Road total reconstruction – Final Phase, Moravian Road resurfacing from Schoenherr to Hayes, Metro Parkway resurfacing from Mound to Ryan, Pond View resurfacing from 19 Mile to Mapleleaf Court, Maple Lane resurfacing from 14 Mile to Volpe and Schoenherr resurfacing from Canal to M-59.

The renewal of the Safe Streets millage has resulted in a $6 million investment in neighborhood streets that will fund sectional repairs and full reconstructions of 30 local streets. The proposed budget also includes the continuation of the sidewalk repair program, the resurfacing of a portion of the Clinton River Park trail system and an update to the City's Master Land Use Plan.

Public Safety is also prioritized with funds proposed for replacing 19 Police vehicles and an Advanced Life Support (ALS) squad ambulance as well as EMS Alternative Response Vehicles (Echo Units) for use by Fire Department personnel responding to 911 calls for medical assistance. Proposed public safety equipment also includes turnout gear and cardiac monitors for Fire Department personnel and radio equipment for Police Department personnel along with facility improvements such as upgrading elevators and replacing skylights at Police Department buildings as well as replacing parking lots at Fire Station #1.

The City's financial position is strong with healthy reserves equating to over $35 million or 28% of General Fund expenditures according to Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Varney who stated "the City continues to focus on economic development, public safety and quality of life services which strengthens economic vitality for our businesses while keeping taxes low for residents all while providing best in class services"
