Renovated Johnson Recreation Center will host free children's education and GED training for adults
DETROIT - Michimich -- One of Detroit's longest running nonprofits, St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center (http://www.svsfcenter.org/) (SVSF Center), is partnering with another Detroit institution, University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, to offer education classes at its Johnson Recreation Center in Detroit.
U of D Jesuit took over the Johnson Center from the City of Detroit two years ago and has renovated the recreation facility and park to now offer a wide array of community and school activities, sports access/training, and — with SVSF Center — education. In November 2022 SVSF Center began providing free GED tutoring for adults on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, bringing its education services to a much-needed part of Detroit. In April, a children's educational program will be available for after-school homework help for grades 1-6.
"We are thrilled that St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center is partnering with University of Detroit Jesuit," said Diane Renaud, executive director of SVSF. "Our two organizations are a perfect alignment of a faith base of service, devotion to education and commitment to the community."

SVSF Center respects and understands the importance of renovating existing structures within the City to serve the community. SVSF Center recently held a grand opening for its new headquarters on Lappin Street in Detroit. It is the first center to be owned by SVSF in its 179-year history and houses various learning programs, basic skill and learning enhancement programs for at-risk children and adults as well as SVSF staff and community resources.
Due to the experience of remodeling a building in the City, Renaud said partnering with U of D Jesuit to help with the rebirth of their historic center made sense. "We are deeply grateful to U of D Jesuit for this opportunity to partner and be able to enhance the already dynamic offerings at the Johnson Recreation Center," she said.
"This partnership fits perfectly with the community vision we have for our new campus. The SVSF tutoring initiative will provide community members with the potential to reshape their future and cultivate a passion for lifelong learning," said Ed Maddox, Director of Johnson Recreation Center.
