DETROIT, Dec. 16, 2024 ~ After 101 days of striking, members of Teamsters Local 283 at Marathon Petroleum's Detroit refinery have finally reached a new contract agreement. The strike began in September when the company refused to negotiate in good faith, forcing the employees to take to the picket line.

According to Steve Hicks, President of Local 283, Marathon Petroleum had been fighting against the union for over a year on a contract that would properly reward the workers who contribute to their profits. However, with this strike, the company was forced to recognize and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of their employees. Hicks expressed gratitude for being able to secure a strong agreement for their members just in time for the holiday season.

The new contract includes a significant 24.5 percent wage increase over its duration, as well as employer-paid health care coverage and access to the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund. Jeff Tricoff, a relief operator at Marathon Petroleum's Detroit refinery and shop steward for Local 283, stated that after 101 days of showing their strength as Teamsters, they were able to secure this contract. He also emphasized how this strike demonstrated the power of unity and determination among workers.

He commended them for standing together through all kinds of weather conditions and demanding fair treatment from their employer. Calo also thanked the negotiating committee, Local 283, and International Vice President for the Central Region Tom Erickson for their efforts in securing this agreement.

Teamsters Local 283 represents more than 800 workers in various industries throughout the Detroit region. This victory serves as an example of what can be achieved when workers stand together and fight for their rights.
