The City Council declared its town a tribal territory, the first of its kind since the advent of slavery, establishing itself as a separate indigenous territory and government for African Americans. The town of Sun Village was founded in 1938 by a Cherokee Chief, who established the town for all indigenous black people in America. This comes on the heels of Governor Gavin Newsom's quest to right the wrongs of racial injustice through reparations.
