The application of blockchain-based technology ensures that the exchange of encrypted information is only available to the information holder via a unique private key. The use of this technology eliminates the need to provide consent to use private data for the communication platform provider. Therefore the users' identity and data remains confidential, in contrast to the traditional setup where email providers are free to share data with its partners for commercial purposes.

Altermail operates on a broad network of servers using Storj.io as file storage partner - currently 84 servers worldwide hold encrypted information of each Altermail user. Altermail is available to anyone via yearly or lifetime subscription, starting from $25 or €21,6. The creation of the account on Altermail takes around two minutes, followed by a payment via cryptocurrency and soon to be added fiat. Similar to any other blockchain-based solution, only the user has the access to the account. However in contrast to other existing blockchain-based messaging only or email only services, Altermail offers a broader set of communication capabilities and encrypts not only access data but the content data as well.  Altermail plans to add chatting and channel features, file storage management and voice calls to its platform in near future.
