DETROIT, July 21, 2025 ~ The Chapman Family Foundation, in collaboration with Google.org, has announced the launch of a new initiative called "AI in the D." This program aims to provide high school students in Detroit with essential skills in artificial intelligence (AI) and entrepreneurship. The one-day workshop is scheduled for July 23, 2025, at Fellowship Chapel and is expected to serve over 100 students.
Founder of the Chapman Family Foundation, Tamira Chapman, expressed the importance of early exposure and access to AI technologies as they continue to rapidly evolve. She stated that without these opportunities, young Detroiters risk being left behind in an economy that will shape their future. The foundation's commitment to this program reflects their mission to drive equity and economic mobility.
Winton Steward, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for the Midwest at Google, also shared his support for the initiative. He believes that investing in youth entrepreneurship and digital literacy is crucial for long-term opportunities. Google.org has granted $200,000 to the Chapman Family Foundation as part of their ongoing commitment to Michigan. Since 2006, they have awarded over $10 million to nonprofits across the state and have worked towards expanding access to digital skills and workforce training.

The partnership between Google.org and the Chapman Family Foundation will allow AI in the D to have a greater impact locally and serve as a model for other communities across the country. This program is designed to eliminate barriers to entry by providing participants with laptops, instruction from expert facilitators, and an opportunity to compete for cash prizes by pitching original AI-driven business concepts.
In addition to this program for high school students, the Chapman Family Foundation will also be launching a companion AI literacy program for senior citizens in Detroit in August. This aligns with their broader efforts towards digital equity.
Participation in AI in the D is free of charge and open to all high school students in Detroit. The foundation hopes that this initiative will equip young Detroiters with the necessary skills to lead and succeed in an increasingly digital world.
