City of Sterling Heights Department of Public Works Cuts Ribbon on New Facility

The City of Sterling Heights cut the ribbon on the new Department of Public Works facility yesterday, Tuesday, Oct. 19.

The new $24.6 million,178,000-square-foot facility will house roughly 100 employees along with DPW fleet vehicles and equipment.

DPW Director Michael Moore has worked closely with the project architect, Kueny Architects, and the general contractor, Lasalle Construction over the last two years to ensure the newly expanded facility will allow DPW to provide seamless, efficient and enhanced resident services.

"In addition to working with the contractors, we worked extra hard to make sure DPW staff were included in the design of this new facility," said Moore. "This staff input was critical to pointing out areas in need of improvement and making sure the enhancements would allow our department to operate as efficiently as possible. This project's success is due to our entire team collaborating on all levels."

Following the ribbon cutting, residents were given walking tours of the new facility featuring demonstrations of new facility enhancements. One demonstration featured loading and weighing salt trucks on the facility's new weight scale. This enhancement ensures vehicles are loaded to a safe legal limit and allows the City to track how much salt is used on each truck.

In addition to the new weight scale, the new facility also includes indoor storage for all DPW vehicles and equipment and exterior storage for job site materials that adheres to Michigan Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) standards. Removing vehicles and equipment from the outdoor elements will increase their life expectancy, thereby helping reduce the City's future capital expenditures.

"This new state-of-the-art facility incorporates improved energy efficiency technology, vehicle maintenance bays, more natural lighting for employees, better ventilation and vastly improved training amenities. The project is consistent with the City's newly adopted Sustainability Plan and, ultimately, will help enhance services to our residents and businesses," said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. "I thank my colleagues on City Council and City Management for their support of this much needed new facility."
