Hottle emphasizes taking a holistic approach when trying to reduce energy consumption. In addition to regular HVAC maintenance and upgrading to a newer model, she suggests using a smart thermostat that can "learn" a family's routine and adjust accordingly. Closing blinds or using blackout curtains during the hottest parts of the day can also prevent natural heat from entering the home.

Other tips include filling cracks around windows and doors to prevent cold air from escaping and hot air from entering, cooking outdoors or using a slow cooker instead of using the oven which can heat up indoor temperatures, and utilizing fans to circulate cool air throughout the home.

Hottle also advises against using energy-consuming appliances during peak hours as they can put additional strain on an already working AC unit. Switching to LED light bulbs is another simple way to reduce energy consumption as they use significantly less power and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.

"It may take a little discipline, but you'll thank yourself when you are able to stay cool without running up the electric bills," says Hottle. "These methods are also environmentally friendly since they reduce energy consumption."
