KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Michimich -- GMNF Missions and Anton Williams Holding Company are launching a joint forum to address the issue of scholarly consensus in theological academia. The concept is often used as a rhetorical device but underlying research has suggested a surprising result.
"Navigating Scholarly Consensus in Theological Higher Education" is a research based project that underlays the joint forum. Data from the 2025-26 ATS Data Tables shows a clear indication of where the academic consensus on theological issues stands for its seminaries. Faculty at evangelical schools accounts for over 66% of total seminary faculty. The largest of these seminaries by student enrollment also have the largest faculty counts. The majority of these seminaries have statements of faith which support the inerrancy of scripture. This is a conservative viewpoint which believes the Bible has no errors not only of faith but also in science and history. The reversal back to conservative stances after liberalism made inroads around 1900 has been profound over the last several decades as liberal Christianity continues its steep decline. Liberty Theological Seminary alone for example, which is a reliably conservative evangelical school, list over 1,300 FTE faculty. That number is near equivalent to FTE faculty of all the liberal Mainline seminaries combined. Over.

The results of the research show that the scholarly consensus at least among the ATS schools is decidedly conservative and Evangelical. This accords with their statements of faith. Usage of scholarly consensus should consider some levels of objective data as this forum intends to show. The implication is potential huge. It could show the scholarly consensus for who wrote the Pentateuch is Moses around 1400 BCE, the prophet Isaiah wrote the entire book attributed to him as did Daniel the prophet for his book in the 6th century BCE. Similarly a conservative inerrancy believing scholarly consensus would support traditional gospel writers as authors, believe Apostle Paul wrote 13 (perhaps 14) epistles and other general writings like 2 Peter was actual written by the Apostle Peter. In addition to issues of biblical studies the forum will also examine systematic theology and historical theology as well.
