Michigan: AG Nessel Urges Congress to Pass Veteran Treatment Court Coordination Act

LANSING – To encourage more support for more than 450 veterans treatment courts across 40 states and territories, last week Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and a bipartisan group of 43 other Attorneys General urged Congress to pass the Veteran Treatment Court Coordination Act of 2019. The act would establish a Veteran Treatment Court Program in the U.S. Department of Justice to provide grants and technical assistance to state, local and tribal courts that implement veterans treatment courts.

Similar to drug and mental health courts used for minor, non-violent offenses, veterans treatment courts provide mentors to address substance abuse and mental health issues along with providing assistance in obtaining employment.

"With more than 600,000 veterans who call Michigan home, veterans treatment courts are a unique opportunity to provide access to a court system that can not only hold them accountable for their actions, but also help rehabilitate them by addressing any underlying issues that may have been a factor in their arrest," said Nessel.

Michigan currently has 27 veterans treatment courts that could benefit from the program if passed.

Nessel joins the Attorneys General of Alabama, Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin in submitting this letter.
