Lansing, MI-John E. Johnson, Jr., Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, has issued the following statement in response to the verdict in the trial of three men accused of murdering Ahmaud Arbery.
"Ahmaud Arbery was chased down and slaughtered like an animal. The jury's verdict in the trial for his murder was appropriate and justified by the evidence. It is a verdict that will not bring Mr. Arbery back, but will hold accountable those responsible for his brutal murder."

"We must now continue to commit ourselves to the elimination of the conditions and mindset that led directly to Mr. Arbery's murder, and the killing of so many other people of color in this country."
The Michigan Civil Rights Commission was created by the Michigan Constitution to safeguard constitutional and legal guarantees against discrimination. The Commission is charged with investigating alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color or national origin, genetic information, sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, and physical and mental disability. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights serves as the operational arm of the Commission.
