LANSING, MI - As part of the state's Small Business Saturday celebration, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Gary McDowell visited Kluck Nursery in Saginaw earlier this week highlighting Michigan's robust Christmas tree industry as the holiday season officially kicks off for 2021.
"It's more important than ever that Michiganders support our wonderful local businesses this holiday season," said McDowell. "Small businesses are the foundation of our thriving economy and an important part of the Governor's MI New Economy plan. It's wonderful to showcase how agriculture plays a role in making the holidays bright for Michiganders and families across the Midwest."
Michigan is home to a robust agricultural sector, ranking third in the nation for the production of Christmas trees.
"Michigan growers produce a wide variety of tree species - more than any other state. That means Michigan consumers have many options to choose from when selecting a perfect Christmas tree. Whether you are in the market for a soft Frasier fir, a classic blue-green Blue spruce, or a Concolor fir with a fragrant citrus smell, Michigan farms have you covered," said Amy Start, Michigan Christmas Tree Association.

"Real Christmas trees are not only fragrant and beautiful, but they're also a renewable, recyclable resource," added McDowell. "For every real Christmas tree harvested, one to three seedlings are planted the following spring. There are about 350,000 acres in production for growing Christmas trees in the U.S., much of it preserving green space."
Kluck Nursery, Inc. in Saginaw, Michigan, is a fourth-generation nursery operation, which started operations in the late 1920s. Kluck Nursery offers a wide range of nursery stock such as ornamental trees, evergreens, vines, groundcover, shrubs, ferns, and perennials. While open year-round, it is known throughout the holiday season for its production of over 60,000 Christmas trees on more than 60 acres. The Christmas tree farm, which includes high-quality, locally grown trees, attracts customers across Michigan and the Midwest.
