Nearly 40% of people are choosing not to go anywhere for their summer vacation this year. Why? Economic concerns.
DETROIT - Michimich -- A new Briefs Media poll shows that readers are sharply divided when it comes to summer travel this year. 37% say they'll be flying, 26% will be driving, and 37% report they aren't going anywhere, choosing to stay home amid rising costs and economic uncertainty.
What Readers Are Saying
Among those staying home, financial priorities were front and center:
"Staying at home… just too expensive and too many unknowns in the economy." – B.P. C.
"Staying home. Gotta put in that decade of sacrifice." – John J.
For some, home improvement beat out vacations:
"We just went on a short lake trip. We're spending the rest of the summer at home, putting money into home improvements and paying off the mortgage!" – C.R.
Among those flying, advance planning helped, but not by much:

"Flying, but I bought my tickets in advance… even then, it wasn't cheap." – Andy M.
And the drivers are opting for small getaways over big splurges:
"Weekend trips here and there. I'm focusing on strengthening my investments, so no international travel this summer (I'm a high school teacher)." – A.E.
What This Means for the Travel Industry
The results suggest that economic caution is shaping 2025 summer travel. While some travelers are sticking to plans made early (and often paid for in advance), many are pulling back, prioritizing debt repayment, home investments, or simply bracing for economic uncertainty.
For airlines, hotels, and travel companies, this mixed picture signals both opportunity and challenge: consumers are still traveling, but they're more selective and price-sensitive than before.
