ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michimich -- The Shudokan Martial Arts Association (SMAA) is exploring the role of uke (receiver of a technique in Japanese Karate (https://www.smaa-hq.com/about)) in traditional karate training.
Uke is the person who receives a technique during partner practice or demonstration. While the role may appear passive, effective uke training requires concentration, accuracy, and commitment.
Responsibilities of Uke
The student must perform the attack correctly, maintain appropriate timing, and remain attentive throughout the technique. Being too slow, inaccurate, or careless can interfere with the practice.
These responsibilities make uke an important part of partner training.
Karate-do training has elements of a contact sport.
Students may experience being struck, swept, or thrown as they learn different techniques. Learning to handle a certain amount of discomfort can therefore be an important part of continuing to practice.
The purpose is not to encourage unnecessary pain or disregard for safety; rather, it helps students stay focused when training becomes uncomfortable.

Developing Resilience
The ability to continue after a difficult experience is another important part of training.
Knowing that a technique is going to result in a hard landing may cause anxiety. Training the attack, receiving the technique, getting up, and repeating the movement can lead to a resilient mindset.
It also reinforces the idea that discomfort does not necessarily mean training should stop.
The Value of Being Selected
Being chosen as uke can be intimidating for many students.
The student knows the technique is coming and may know that it will be uncomfortable. Other students may be relieved that they were not selected. However, being uke provides an opportunity to work closely with an instructor and experience the technique directly.
The student has to remain focused and perform correctly despite the pressure.
Partner Training and Traditional Karate
Uke and the person performing the technique both contribute to the quality of partner training.
A reliable uke allows the instructor to demonstrate techniques properly and gives other students a clearer example to study. At the same time, receiving the technique gives the uke a different perspective on its movement, timing, and application.
