A fun night can turn into disaster in a flash if a firework accident occurs, so here are a few tips on safety along with the new laws regarding fireworks. We always recommend you leave fireworks to the professionals and put safety first!
If you choose to use fireworks:
1. Read the labels to understand how the fireworks will perform, fly and likely land and how they should be ignited.
2. Always have a bucket of water or a charged hose in close proximity when igniting fireworks.
3. It would be devastating to see anybody lose their eye sight, so safety glasses are a necessity.
4. Spectators should be at least 50 feet away from any fireworks, and only adults should be igniting the fireworks while wearing a long sleeve shirt with pants to help protect skin from burns.
5. If a firework fails to launch or ignite, DO NOT attempt to reignite it. In this situation, wait 20 minutes before submersing it in a bucket of water kept nearby for safety.
6. Last but not least, be a good neighbor and clean up all the debris from the fireworks and immerse in water before disposing them in a metal container that is away from any structure.

Now it's time to lay down the law:
- Fireworks can only be discharged between June 29 and July 4.
- They can only be used between the hours of 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. on those days.
- Use of fireworks may not disturb the public peace, violate the City's noise or nuisance ordinances or result in litter.
- Fireworks can only be used on private property with the permission of the owner, and cannot be discharged in streets, on sidewalks, in parks, on school property or on church property.
- They cannot be used within 25 feet of other people or 50 feet of minors (unless on their own property), 500 feet from a gas station or when winds exceed 10 mph.
- Fireworks cannot be launched from a public street or sidewalk which is a violation we see on a regular basis during this time period.
- Lastly, nobody under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance can use fireworks.
Failure to observe these practices can result in a citation, or worse yet, an injury.
If you observe any of these violations, you can call the Sterling Heights Police Department non-emergency line at (586) 446-2800.
Following these tips will help ensure we all have a safe and fun holiday!
