~ Sterling, MI - As the holiday season approaches, the city of Sterling has announced several building closures and special events for its residents. The Community Center, Nature Center, Senior Center, and Butterfly Conservatory will be closed on December 6th, 18th, 24th, 25th, and 31st. However, the Community Center and Senior Center will open at 5 p.m. on December 18th for evening activities.

One of the most highly anticipated events is the opening of the Dodge Park Ice Rink on Monday, December 1st from noon to 9 p.m. This winter wonderland will be open all season long for residents to come and enjoy some ice skating fun.

On Saturday, December 6th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sterling will host its annual holiday tradition - Sterling Christmas. This festive event will take place at Dodge Park and will feature a tree lighting ceremony, caroling, visits from Santa Claus, train rides, pony rides, a petting farm, ice skating, refreshments and more. Families are encouraged to bring an ornament representing their family to hang on the community tree inside the historic Upton House.

For those looking for some friendly competition this winter season, the Adult Basketball League is set to begin on Thursday January 8th. Teams can register in person at the Community Center until Monday December 22nd. The league guarantees eight games with upper and lower divisions and team uniforms provided.

The Community Center is also hosting two exciting holiday events in December. On Friday December 12th from 6-9:30 p.m., residents can attend "Deck the Halls with Disco Balls" - a groovy holiday bash featuring dinner catered by local restaurants, a visit with Santa Claus, a craft station and plenty of music and dancing. Tickets can be purchased online.

On Tuesday December 16th from 6-7 p.m., the Community Center will host a gingerbread workshop where participants can learn how to make the perfect gingerbread treats. Main ingredients will be provided, and participants just need to add their choice of protein at home. Tickets can be purchased online.

For those who prefer a more low-key holiday celebration, the Community Center is also hosting a holiday party on Friday December 19th from 7-9 p.m. This event will feature interactive activities and refreshments.

The Senior Center is also getting into the holiday spirit with several events planned for its residents. On Wednesday December 3rd at 2 p.m., the Heritage Handbells group will perform at the Senior Center. This group has been entertaining audiences for nearly 20 years and is composed of community residents as well as bell ringers from Oakland and Macomb counties.

On Friday December 12th from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., John from High Fidelity Sounds will provide music for a catered meal provided by Century Banquet. Registered participants will also have a chance to take home some presents.

And for grandparents looking for some quality time with their grandchildren during the holiday break, the Senior Center is hosting a chair volleyball competition on Monday December 22nd at 1 p.m. Families can register in person at the Senior Center until December 10th.

In addition to these events, Sterling is also hosting a Community Blood Drive on Tuesday December 16th from 2:30-7 p.m. at the Community Center. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred.
