The Michigan Parks and Recreation Association, known as mParks, recently announced the Sterling Heights Parks and Rec Department will receive an award of recognition this year at the mParks Conference & Trade Show at the Lansing Center on March 8, 2023.
Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation is being awarded a 2022-2023 Facility Design Award for the new Esports Arena that opened in October 2021 in the Sterling Heights Community Center. Judging criteria included the project's purpose, local significance, degree of innovation, aesthetic quality, functionality, construction viability and the unique techniques used in implementation. The award reflects the City's ongoing commitment to enhancing quality of life as well as its efforts to make sure there are inclusive recreation opportunities that appeal to all residents.
Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Langlois said he is humbled and thrilled to receive this mParks award.

"I am incredibly proud of our entire Parks and Recreation team, as well as being a part of an organization that recognizes the importance of Parks and Recreation in all shapes and sizes," said Langlois. "We're also extremely grateful to our great partnership with Christian Financial Credit Union whose sponsorship made our Esports Arena possible."
"As our world becomes increasingly digital oriented, we see firsthand the need to have tech-forward talent," said Christian Financial Credit Union Senior Vice President Rebekah Monroe. "The Sterling Heights Esports Arena is an innovative way to encourage interest in future tech careers, while also building an environment of inclusion, collaboration, and fun. The Esports Arena's mission is very much aligned with our core values, and we were elated to partner with the city of Sterling Heights on this project."
"With the passing of the Recreating Recreation millage in 2016, Sterling Heights residents confirmed City Council's strong commitment to improving and focusing on parks, recreation and sense of place," said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. "We congratulate the entire Parks and Recreation Department on this award and thank them for their continued dedication to creating world-class recreational opportunities that are inclusive of the interests of everyone in our diverse community."
