Ann Arbor's AACE 2.0 will deploy C-V2X emergency vehicle pre-emption at 12 intersections and on 10 fire vehicles to cut emergency response times, reduce delays, and improve safety citywide.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michimich -- The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and P3Mobility announced today a major step forward in connected transportation with the launch of an advanced Emergency Vehicle Pre-emption (EVP) system as part of the Ann Arbor Connected Environment 2.0 (AACE 2.0) project. This initiative will use Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology to enable faster emergency response times, while increasing safety and reducing traffic congestion.
Building on Ann Arbor's existing Smart Intersections Project (SIP), P3Mobility will integrate its V2X Nexus platform across new and existing intersections to enable secure, real-time communication between Ann Arbor fire department vehicles and traffic signal controllers. When an authorized emergency vehicle is dispatched, the system will dynamically adjust traffic signals to provide a clear path of travel.

"Ann Arbor has been a leader in connected vehicle technology innovation since 2012 with the launch of the USDOT-funded Safety Pilot Model Deployment Program," said Andrew Donaldson, Lead Engineer in Research at UMTRI. "This next phase brings real, measurable safety benefits to our first responders and the public they serve."

Jeremy Ward, VP of Operations at P3Mobility, added, "By combining advanced C-V2X communications, secure SCMS-based authorization, and precise intersection control strategies, we're delivering a solution that improves local emergency response times and paves the way for interoperable deployments nationwide."
The EVP system will be integrated with Ann Arbor's existing traffic controllers and will log all activity for post-event analysis in their V2X Nexus system.
