ATLANTA, May 20, 2025 ~ As the summer season begins, the threat of mosquitoes looms over many cities in the United States. According to Orkin's 2025 Top 50 Mosquito Cities List, some cities are experiencing a higher influx of these pesky insects than others. For the fourth year in a row, Los Angeles has claimed the top spot on the list, with other cities like Detroit, Cleveland, and Denver climbing their way into the top 10.
Orkin's annual list is based on the number of new residential mosquito treatments performed from April 2024 to March 2025. As outdoor activities increase during the summer months, so does the need for proactive mosquito control to protect public health and comfort.
This year's top five cities include Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and Detroit. Detroit has made its first-ever appearance in the top rankings, while Cleveland and Denver have also broken into the top 10 for the first time. This signals a larger presence of mosquitoes in northern cities as temperatures rise. California remains a stronghold for mosquito activity with five cities in the Top 50: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego and Fresno. The high temperatures and proximity to standing water make it no surprise that mosquitoes are frequent residents of this West Coast state.

The rankings are determined by Orkin's data on new residential mosquito treatments performed from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025.
Beyond being a nuisance, mosquitoes pose a major health threat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they are responsible for more deaths annually than any other creature - causing over 600,000 malaria-related deaths each year. They also transmit other dangerous diseases such as West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and Zika virus. This makes prevention critical during this time of year.
Frank Meek, an entomologist at Orkin states that "Mosquito control isn't just about avoiding itchy bites, it's about safeguarding your health and your community. Proactive measures are key to controlling these seasonal surges in mosquito activity."
To renew their commitment to public health, Orkin has launched the Mosquitoes Don't Deserve a Drop campaign in partnership with the American Red Cross. From May 20 to June 30, 2025, for every mosquito control service purchased, Orkin will donate $25 to the American Red Cross, up to $250,000. These donations will help maintain a healthy blood supply across the U.S. while encouraging homeowners to take proactive steps against mosquito-borne illnesses.

While living in areas with dense mosquito populations can seem daunting, there are simple preventive measures that homeowners can take to reduce mosquito activity. Orkin suggests using the acronym BITE as a reminder of these steps:
- Block access to skin by wearing long sleeves and pants and using CDC-recommended repellents.
- Install tight-fitting screens on windows and doors.
- Trim shrubs, grass, and other vegetation to reduce mosquito resting areas.
- Eliminate standing water which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
