When storms caused the closure of several snowmobile trails in Alcona County earlier this month, the cleanup was expected to take at least two weeks. Good news for area snowmobilers, though – the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Huron-Manistee National Forests and the Alcona County Parks and Recreation Department have re-opened the state-designated snowmobile trails one week ahead of schedule.
Snowmobile Trails No. 96 (west of Trail No. 665), 961, 962, 963, 964, 966 and 971 initially were closed after a Dec. 12 snow storm caused trees and branches to fall onto trails, creating hazardous riding conditions.

Alcona County Parks and Recreation, Iosco County Parks and Recreation, volunteer groups, the DNR and the U.S. Forest Service provided critical assistance in getting the trails re-opened in a timely manner.
"We want to thank Alcona County Parks and Recreation and all of our partners for working so quickly to clean up dangerous debris along the trails," said Paige Perry, DNR Parks and Recreation Division trails specialist. "We know that as soon as we have rideable snow that snowmobilers want to use the trails, especially over the holidays. The swift work and cooperation between all those involved is greatly appreciated."
